Simon A. Myhre was born on June 16, 1834 in Ringebu, Oppland fylke, Norway. He came to the U.S. in 1861 with his brother Hans Myhre. Their brother Peter Myhre came a few years earlier in 1857.
Myhre joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed Myhre as living in St. Lawrence, Waupaca County, WI. He was 26 years old and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 9, 1861 at Scandinavia, WI, soon after arriving in WI. He mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Myhre was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) on December 5, 1862. In October 1863, he was with the provisions transport from Stevenson, AL. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863. He was taken prisoner at New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864, and died of scurvy in Andersonville Prison on October 4, 1864. He was buried there in grave 10,289.
On June 14, 2015, dedicated a Gold Start Recipients Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park. The Sheveland-Taylor American Legion Post 14 of Iola raised funds for the monument. It honors veterans from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. Simon Myhre is listed on the memorial plaque.
