Peter A. Myhre was born in 1836 in Ringebu, Oppland fylke, Norway, and came to the US in 1857. He arrived in Milwaukee in June 1857 and made his way to Waupaca County, WI. He was later followed by his brothers Hans Myhre and Simon Myhre, who also served in the Civil War. Myhre joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed him as living in St. Lawrence, Waupaca County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. Myhre enlisted on November 16, 1861 at Scandinavia, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was detached and assigned to the 6th Ohio Battery on October 28, 1863. On May 27, 1864, he was wounded in his head at New Hope Church, GA. He mustered out with Company I at Chattanooga, TN on February 10, 1865.
After the war, Myhre returned to Waupaca County, WI. He filed a pension in April 1880. He also was a charter member of the Iola Post 99 of the Grand Army of the Republic with his brother Hans. Myhre died on March 18, 1889 in Scandinavia, WI. A stone reading “Peter A. Myhre –1889” is in Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery Sect. II Row 4, Scandinavia, Waupaca County, WI.
