1814 to 1905 – Norway Finding its identity as a Sovereign Nation Webinar – Webinar Recording

The 17th of May is the national holiday of Norway. It is celebrated in honor of the signing of the constitution in 1814 on Eidsvold with representatives from the entire country. This action was a rebellious act to claim Norway as a sovereign country. It had already been under Denmark since the devastation of the plagues in 1350 and was then given as a war prize to Sweden. Some wise and educated Norwegians gathered on Eidsvold under Count Jarlsberg, (yes the cheesemonger), and wrote up a constitution based on the recently written American and the French one a little later. Let’s explore the years of political turmoil among growing Norwegian patriotism from 1814 to 1905.
