Nels Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Nelson as living in Hamburg, Bad Ax (Vernon) County, born in Norway, working as a farmer, and age 16. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’5”. Nelson enlisted for three years on August 25, 1862 at La Crosse, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He had a bounty of $100. On July 29, 1863, he detached to 8th WI Battery by order of Col. Hans C. Heg. Nelson transferred to the WI 24th Infantry in December 1864, Company H at Whiteside, TN, and then to the 24th Infantry on February 13, 1865. He discharged on June 22, 1865 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Elroy, WI.
