Niels Johnson was born in Bylderup, Slesvig, Denmark on November 22, 1832. He came to America in 1859. Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company. The army listed him as living in Norway Township, Racine County, WI, age 29, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 12, 1861 at Waterford, WI, and mustered on December 2, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Corporal (Korporal).

Johnson was assigned as escort with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL on October 13, 1863. He was promoted to Sergeant (Sersjant) on May 1, 1863. He was sick in Chattanooga on November 28, 1863. Johnson transferred to the 68th IN on February 1,  1864. He came back to Company C on April 1, 1864 and mustered out on January 1, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant (Løytnant) on February 25, 1867, effective from October 19, 1864. His name is on the Roll of Honor for the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps. After the war, he became a farmer at North Cape.
