Nils P. Gram joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed Gram as living in Stockholm, Pepin County, WI, age 44, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 5, 1861 at Stockholm, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Mound City, IL in September and December 1862. He was discharged from the service at Mound City for chronic diarrhea on June 16, 1863.

In 1890, he was living in Florence, Goodhue, MN. A pension was filed by his widow, Julia in 1892.
