Ole Olson Brager was born 1836 in Sør-Aurdal, Oppland fylke, Norway. His parents were Ole Ellendsen Brager Braka and Kari Olsdatter S. Grøv. He immigrated in 1861.

He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. Two brothers – Knud and Ellend – also joined the Wisconsin 15th. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Brager as a laborer and age 27. He had blue eyes, red hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’6½”. He enrolled was a Private (Menig) for one year on November 5, 1864 at Fond du Lac, WI as a substitute for William Marsh of Lyman, Dodge County, WI. He was said to have also been in the WI 15th Infantry, but nothing official found. He became ill and was sent to a hospital in Madison, WI where he died of disease on May 11, 1865. He was buried at Black Earth, Vermont Township, WI. His stone reads “29 Dec 1839 – 11 May 1865”.
