Ingebret O. Baalstad joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed Baalstad as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 22, 1861, at Camp Randall, Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 9, 1862, as a Private (Menig). He was home on leave to Primrose on May 11, 1862. He was sick in hospital in Madison on May 11, 1862 and June 6, 1863. He was absent without leave on June 11, 1863. Baalstad was with Bridge’s Battery in November 1863.
