Newton K. Andrew joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed Andrew as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 19, and unmarried. He enlisted on January 15, 1862 at Camp Randall, Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 27, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL in September and October 1863. He served as an orderly in the camp hospital on May 4, 1864. He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) on September 1, 1864. He mustered out with I Company on February 10, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN. On December 14, 1908, his widow Anne C. Andrew filed a pension in his name.
