Peder Refsland was born in Gjendal, Bakke, Vest-Agder, Norway on November 25, 1822 to Hans Torstensen and Anne Evensdatter. He had three marriages: Ingeborg Barstad in 1846, Gunhild Øistad in 1851, and Karen Kolbensdatter in 1854. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city. The army listed him as living in Christiana, WI. He served as the 2nd Assistant Surgeon. He died on July 25, 1902 at Bridgewater, SD.
