John S. Wheeter was born in Goteberg, Sweden. He joined the IL 15th Infantry, Company G. The army listed him as living in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois, age 25, laborer, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, and 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on May 24, 1861 at Freeport and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was killed on April 6, 1862 in the battle of Pittsberg Landing, Tennessee.
