Robert Watson was born in England. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed him as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 43, and a farmer. He had blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, and 5’10” tall. Watson enlisted for three years on February 18, 1864 at Amherst, WI and mustered at Madison, WI on March 16, 1864 as a Private (Menig). He joined Company I on the battlefield on July 1, 1864. In August 1864, he was sick in a Division hospital. He was then temporarily assigned to the WI 24th Infantry, but transferred to I Company of the WI 13th on June 10, 1865. He mustered out July 14, 1865.
