Arne Torkilson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed him as living in Spring Prairie, Walworth County, WI, age 20, and unmarried. He nlisted for three years on November 9, 1861 at Madison, WI and mustered there on November 25, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Nashville, TN on September 13, 1863 and in Chattanooga, TN on October 18, 1864. He was missing from the Regimental rolls for awhile but was found to have been sick in a hospital in Keokuk, IA since mid October 1864. When he mustered out of the 15th Regiment he was also sick.
