Peder Thompson was born “Per Torgeirsen Såheimsmogen” in 1837 at Tinn, Telemark, Norway. He was the son of Torgeir Vetlesen Såheimsmogen and Aagoth Tovsdatter. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in Minnesota and Iowa, with the rest from Wisconsin.
The army listed him as living in Ridgeway, Winneshiek County, Iowa, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 23, 1862 in Winneshiek County and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin on February 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He left sick in Bowling Green, Kentucky on November 4, 1862 and he died there on January 8,1863. He was buried in National Cemetery at Nashville, Tennessee, section N, grave 453.
