Asbjorn Steensland was born in 1833 at Steensland farm, Hjelmeland, Rogaland, Norway, a son of Erik Asbjornsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter. He came to America in 1854 and joined the WI 46th Infantry Company F. The army listed him as living in Moscow, Iowa County, Wisconsin. His enlistment credited to Fulton, Rock County, age 31, a farmer, and married. He had brown hair, light complexion, and 5’7”. He enlisted for one year on February 14, 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered there on February 16, 1865 as a Private (Menig). He had a bounty of $100, $33.33 of which was paid. On June 23, 1865, he was detached to service at Indian Creek railroad. He mustered out with thisCompany on September 27, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. After the war, he was living at Moscow, Iowa County, in 1880, with his wife and eight children. He was a brother to Ole Steensland of WI 15th Infantry Company E.
