Soren Pederson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.

The army listed him as living in East Troy, Cast Iron, Walworth County, WI and age 29. He enlisted for three years on January 23, 1864 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on February 16, 1864 as a Private (Menig). He joined Company K at Strawberry Plains, VA on March 31, 1864. On May 27, 1864, he was taken prisoner at New Hope Church, GA and died of scorbutus (scurvy) in Andersonville Prison on September 5, 1864. He was buried there in grave 7893.

This appears to be a duplicate of Soren Pederson, born Denmark. Co K, who suffered from Scurvy, but who survived the war. Grave 7893 is assigned to Sivert Pederson, died of scurvy 5 Sep 1864 (in the Andersonville prison death record for that day Pvt. S Peterson, WI 15th, Co. K died of scurvy, but grave 7485 is associated with that name…this is the only entry for the WI 15th on that date).
