Knud Oleson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed him as living in Dunkirk, Dane County, WI, born in Norway, age 35, a farmer, and married. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’10”. He enlisted for three years on January 16, 1864 at Pleasant Springs, Dane County, and mustered on March 9, 1864 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was sick at Nashville, TN on June 11, 1864. Oleson transferred to I Company of the WI 13th Infantry on June 11, 1865. There was no discharge given or muster out of I Company.
