Ole Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Nelson as living in Koshkonong, Jefferson County, WI, age 25, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 8, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Nelson was sick in Union City, TN from June 14-19, 1862 and then sick in hospital in St. Louis on January 1, 1863. He was discharged from the service at St. Louis for disability on July 27, 1863.
