Andrew Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Nelson as living in Stoughton, Dane County, WI, born in Norway, age, 23, and unmarried. He worked as a laborer, had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’7”. He enlisted for three years on October 17, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He died of disease in hospital at Winchester, TN on August 4, 1863.
