Ole H. Milesteen was born “Ole Halvorsen Milesten” on February 6, 1840, son of Halvor Olsen Milestenen and Else Larsdatter Olimb of Hadeland, Norway. He came with his parents and two siblings from Jevnaker parish, Oppland fylke in 1848. They came to Springfield Township, Dane County, WI, and moved by 1850 to Perry Township, Dane County.

He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed Milesteen as living in Perry, Dane County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 23, 1861 in Dane County, and mustered on January 1, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was seriously wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Stones River near Murfreesboro, TN on December 31, 1862 and paroled. He was in parole camp at Annapolis, MD before being moved to Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO. After he returned to his company, he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. He was entered on the Roll of Honor for the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps.
