Ole Mikkelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway. At the time, Mikkelson was listed as 20 years old and unmarried. He enlisted for three years of service on January 15, 1862 in Winneshiek County, IA. He mustered at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig) on February 11, 1862.

On June 11, 1862, he was left at Mississippi Island No. 10 because he was ill. On July 22, 1862, he was discharged from service at Jacinto, MS for being unwell and unfit for service. In 1890, Ole filed a pension from MN.
