Thor Knudson was born on January 20, 1836 in Valders, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed him as living in Barre, La Crosse County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. Knudson enlisted for three years on December 7, 1861 in La Crosse County, and mustered on December 20, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig) and Musician. He was sent to the Division Hospital on August 3, 1864. Knudson was in Chattanooga Hospital when he was last heard from. He mustered out with Company E in Chattanooga, TN on December 20, 1864.

After the war, Knudson returned to La Crosse, WI. He married Betsy about 1868. Together, they had four children, two of whom were still living in 1910: Charlie (1869) and Tillman (1879). He died on April 14, 1917.
