Ole K. Knudson was born “Ole Knudson Kirkeberg” in Valders, Norway. He immigrated before 1855 to Manitowoc County, WI. He and his wife, Bertha/Briet, had at least nine children, including: Knud (1855), Ole (1856), Mary (1857), Ingri (1859), Mary #2 (1860), Briet/ Bertha (1863), Emilie (1864), Niels (1866), and Otto (1869). All the children were born in WI.

Knudson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves “KK’s Protectors” in honor of the 15th’s first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway. The army listed him as living in Manitowoc County, WI, age 36, and married. Knudson enlisted on October 23, 1861, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 12, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He assigned as a Company Musician. He was sick in the hospital on July 20, 1862 and in the hospital at Iuka, MS on August 21, 1862. He was discharged from the service for disease in St. Louis, MO on February 16, 1863.

After the war, he returned to Liberty, Manitowoc County, WI and worked as a farmer. He died on May 17, 1904 and is buried in West Valders Cemetery, Liberty Township, Manitowoc County, WI.
