Knud Knudson joined WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway. The army listed him as living in Clermont, Fayette County, IA, age 25, and married. He enlisted for three years on January 29, 1862, at Clermont, and mustered at Madison, WI, on February 13, 1862, as a Private (Menig). Knudson was sick in a Convalescent Center at New Albany, IN, in August 1863. He died of chronic diarrhea in hospital at Louisville, KY, on October 16, 1863. In 1894, his widow, Ragnhild Lovend (Løverud), who did not emigrate with Knud, but remained with their two children in Norway, applied for a pension in his name.
