Knud Johnson was born in February 1840 in Norway. He immigrated in 1854.

He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed him as living in Viroqua, Bad Ax (now Vernon) County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 16, 1861 in Bad Ax County and mustered on December 20, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Johnson was detached to serve in ordnance (as an orderly?) at 3rd Brigade Headquarters on August 21, 1863. He was sick in the hospital at Chattanooga on September 28, 1863; sick at Nashville, TN on October 8, 1863; sick at Dalton on February 22, 1864. He mustered out with Company E, in Chattanooga, TN on December 20, 1864.

After the war, he moved to Bloomfield, Fillmore, MN. He married Elsie Hellickson on June 4, 1879 in Fillmore. In 1880, he was working as a farmer. In 1900, they were still living in Bloomfield. Their children included: Amanda (1880), Josephina (1882), Carline (1884), Jessey (1886), and Olga C. (1886). Elsie filed a pension as a widow in 1919.
