The governor, on October 19, 1864, officially commissioned him a Field Chaplain. He mustered out on January 13, 1865.

After the war, he was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as a pastor in several communities including Coon Prairie, Vernon County, WI, and Chicago, IL  He was also called back to Norway between 1880 and 1888.  He and Anna had at least five Children: Cyrus C (ca 1869-1938), Ida (ca 1871-aft 1948), Mathilde (ca 1873-aft 1948), John Edwin  (1875-1951) and Wilbur Vogt (1877-1948).  John died October 8, 1896, in Cook County, IL, and is buried in Richwood Methodist Cemetery, Byrds Creek, Richland County, WI.
