Carl J. Johnson was born in 1824 in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company. The army listed him as living in Norway, Racine County, WI, age 39, and married. He enlisted for three years on November 5, 1861 at Waterford, and mustered on December 2, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Johnson was sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He was discharged from the service for disability at Iuka, MS on August 18, 1862.

After the war, he returned to Racine County, WI. He and his wife, Youakema, had three children: Martene, Anna (1862), and Minnie (1864). His wife died in 1897 and he did in 1907. They are both buried in buried in Norway Cemetery, Norway, Racine, WI.
