Ole L Haunes was born on November 27, 1839 at Haugnes, Hurdal, Akershus, Norway, son of Lars Hansen Haugnes and Karen Katrine Hansdatter Buraas. He emigrated to America in 1861. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway.
The army listed Haunes as living in Clermont, Fayette County, IA, age 23, a farmer, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on January 10, 1862 at Clermont, and mustered at Madison, WI on February 13, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Bowling Green, KY on November 4, 1862. He was wounded at Chickamauga, GA on September 19, 1863 and sent to hospital. Haunes was later sent north. He was then wounded in the Battle of New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864 and captured by the enemy. He died of his wounds in Andersonville Prison on January 22, 1865.
