Hubbard Hammock was born on March 1, 1844 in Rhea County, TN to Samuel Hammock and Teresa Qualls. Both of his parents were born in SC.  In 1860, he was living with his parents in Marion County, TN.

Hammock joined WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.

The army listed him as 20 years old and a Private (Menig). He was a substitute for Corporal Fredrik Fleischer. He enrolled for three years and mustered on August 26, 1863 at Stevenson, AL, to serve the remainder of Fleisher’s term which began on October 26, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga, GA on September 20, 1863 and sent to the general hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He moved to a hospital in Louisville, KY and was still there on August 24, 1864. He was discharged from the service on December 20, 1864 at Chattanooga, TN.

After the war in 1880, Hammock was living in Blackwater, Saline County, MO with his wife Lida Margaret and working as a farmer. In the 1890 OK Census, he and Lida had two sons: John W. (1881) and Charles S. (1883). They were living in Stillwater, Payne County, OK. Lida died in 1895 and Hammock married his second wife, Almarinda (Rinda) Ellis on December 2, 1896. In 1910, they were living in Lagoon, Pawnee County, OK. Hammock died on December 23, 1925 in Payne County, OK and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in the same county.
