Alfred Greenwood was born in Wyota, Lafayette County, WI in April 1843. In 1850, he was living with his parents, Theodore Greenwood and Boletta Hendrickson, and his siblings Hellena (Ann) who was born in 1845, Joseph (1848), and Henry (1849). They were living in New Glarus, WI. In 1860, he was living with his parents and other siblings Julia C. (1851) and Mary F. (1853), and Theadore (1857).
Greenwood joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.” The army listed Greenwood as living in New Glarus, Green County, WI, unmarried, and age 18. He enlisted for three years on January 27, 1862 at New Glarus, and mustered at Madison, WI on January 28, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Bridgeport, AL on September 13, 1863. He was served with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL in October 1863. He was sick on October 20, 1863 and sent to hospital. On June 29, 1864, he was sent to hospital in Louisville, KY. He discharged from the service from Harvey hospital in Madison, WI on January 9, 1865 for chronic diarrhea and phthisis pulmonalis (pulmonary consumption).
After the war on January 3, 1867, he married Mary Jane Lyons in Green County, WI. She was born in 1849 in PA to Robert Lyons and Susan Brink. In 1870, they were living in Montrose, Dane, WI with their daughter, Clara (1868). He was working as a wagon maker. In 1880, he was living in the same town with his new wife, Jane Olson (1851) and their daughter, Emma (1879). In the 1890s, he was living in the Old Soldiers’ Home in Marion Branch, Marion, IN. He was listed as a widow.
