Peter H. Funkley was born in Kongsberg, Norway on February 18, 1833 to Halvor P. Funkley and Margit Gunnuldsdotter. He came to America at age six. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of his company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Funkley as living in Jefferson County, WI, age 30, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 7, 1861 in Jefferson County, and mustered on December 1, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was absent, sick in a field hospital near Murfreesboro, TN since March 21, 1863. He was discharged from the service for disability due to sickness on June 13, 1863 at Nashville, TN.
After the war, he married Karen (Caroline) Jensdotter in Christiana, Dane County, WI on June 14, 1866. She was born ca. 1849 to Jens Hansen and Kari Kettlesdotter. Together, they had 12 children, 10 of whom were still living in 1900. They included: Henry (1867), James (1875), Charles (1873), Martha (1877), John (1878), Clara (1880), Anna (1883), George (1885), Thomas (1887), Mary (1889), and Knute (1892). They lived in WI until the 1870s when the moved to Wilkin County, MN. Later, they moved to Pierce County, WA. He died there in June 7, 1926.
