Syver K. Foss joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Foss as living in St. Peter, Nicollet County, MN, age 44, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 5, 1861 in Green County, WI, and mustered on December 11, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in hospital at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He was sent to General Hospital near Murfreesboro, TN on March 20, 1863. Foss later moved to hospital at Nashville, TN. He was discharged from the service for disability at Nashville, TN on July 15, 1863.
