Evan Helgesen Floen was born at Floen, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed Floen as living in Albert Lea, Freeborn County, MN, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on March 6, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Mound City, IL on September 17, 1862 and December 2, 1862. He was discharged from the service there for disease on December 31, 1862. After the war, he got married. He died about 1879. According to his descendants, Even had lost some fingers during the war and came back in poor health, perhaps attributing to his early death. His widow, Licie E. filed a pension in his name in 1880.
