Nels Erikson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed Erikson as living in Metomen, Fond du Lac County, WI, a farmer, and age 20. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on February 26, 1864 at Janesville, WI, and mustered there the same day. He had a bounty of $302 and served as a Private (Menig). He joined G Company at Loudon, TN on April 9, 1864. He had sick in hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He was then transferred to Company H at Whiteside, TN on January 1, 1865. He was then temporarily assigned to the WI 24th Infantry. On June 10, 1865, he transferred to I Company of the WI 13th. He mustered out on November 14, 1865. On August 29, 1891, he filed for a pension.
