Lewis Erikson was born in 1842 in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Erikson as living in Portland, Monroe County, WI, age 21, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 12, 1861 at Monroe, and mustered on December 10, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was sick, became unfit for service. Erikson was discharged at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on account of disability on June 19, 1862 by order of General Henry W. Halleck.

After the war, he married Ellen. She was born in 1849 in Norway. They had at least three children: Amanda (1885), Henry Nordal (1889), and Fryda (1903). In 1905, they were living in Portland, Monroe County, WI and he was a farmer. On June 26, 1919, Ellen filed a pension in his name.
