Anders Ellefson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of his company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
The army listed Ellefson as living in Mt. Morris, Waushara County, WI, age 26, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 25, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 1, 1862. He was sick again in Bowling Green, KY on June 1, 1863, and in Tullahoma, TN in July. Ellefson was taken prisoner in the Battle of Chickamauga, GA on September 20, 1863. He died of disease in Libby Prison, Richmond, VA on April 26, 1864. He was buried in National Cemetery at Danville, VA.
