Joseph L. Daremo was born in November 1846 in NY. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”
The army listed Daremo as living in Beloit, Rock County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 11, 1861 at Beloit, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 13, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL in October 1863. He detached to the Ambulance Corps on June 28, 1864. He mustered out with the Company on January 13, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.
After the war, he married Janevia (Genevra) Wright Deremo. She was born in 1849 in OH. In 1880, they were living in Hixton, Jackson County, WI. Their children were Orpha (1870) and Hugh (1879). By 1900, Daremo was widowed. Janevia had died on January 18, 1889 and is buried in Pole Grove Cemetery, Hixton, WI. Daremo was eventually relocated to the NW Branch of Homes of Disabled Soldiers in Milwaukee, WI. He died of carcinoma of the right eye on February 5, 1920. He is buried in the Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, WI.
