They had at least two children: Theodor, baptized October 18, 1857, and Orginant, baptized April 24, 1859. Carl left for America by himself on March 3, 1861 from Grue. His family immigrated later.

Colbjornson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Colbjornson as living in Madison, Dane County, WI, age 29, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on August 14, 1861 at Madison, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Sergeant (Sersjant). He was discharged from the service for disease at Murfreesboro, TN on March 23, 1863. As a veteran volunteer, he re-enlisted for three years on October 29, 1863 at Madison, and mustered there on November 27, 1863. His widow, Kirsten, filed a pension in his name on March 11, 1895 in IL.
