Fredrik Boyesen joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed Boyesen as living in Madison, Dane County, WI, age 25, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 4, 1862 in Madison, and mustered there the same day. He was designated Sergeant (Sersjant) on January 4, 1862. He was made acting Regimental Sergeant Major in 1863. He served as a hospital steward during 1863. He was Regimental Hospital steward in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863 the day he was reported sick and had been sent to Chicago, IL. He mustered out January 13, 1865.
