John Bleye joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Bleye as living in Chicago, IL, age 30, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 26, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered at Madison, WI on November 15, 1861 as a Corporal (Korporal). He was sick in the hospital in Farmington, MS since July 28, 1862. He was also sick in Corinth, MS and left there. On March 31, 1863, he disappeared and was believed to have gone to Chicago and “is said to have been discharged from the service, but no official information has been received”. He was reclassified as deserter.
