William G. Bentley was born at Hallingdal, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed Bentley as living in Beloit, Rock County, WI, age 45, and married. He enlisted for three years on October 5, 1861 at Beloit, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 13, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was designated a Wagoner. He was discharged from the service at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on May 15, 1862 for disability due to disease. It is not known when Bentley died, but he and his wife, Maria, were present for the wedding of their son, Linus, to Sarah A. Nye in WI on January 15, 1883.
