Kittel Anonsen was born “Kittel Uvaas” in Norway in 1836. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Anonsen as living in Winchester, Winnebago County, WI, age 26, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’10½”. He enlisted for three years on October 24, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in hospital at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He was discharged from the service for disability on October 6, 1862 at Cincinnati, OH. He later enlisted for one year in the A Company of WI 47th Infantry on February 10, 1865 at Dale, WI. He mustered at Madison and was later promoted to Corporal (Korporal). He mustered out on September 4, 1865 at Nashville, TN. After the war, he got married to Thorine and farmed near Winchester. They had at least four childre: Anne (1865), Caroline (1868), Albert (1871), and Martha (1878). He died in 1894. He was buried in Winchester Cemetery; stone reads “Kittle Anunson 1836 – 1894”.
