Johannes Andersen was born on the Turvold farm, Vik parish, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway on March 21, 1841. He arrived in America on July 2, 1845 with his parents Anders Olsen Turvoll and Anna Johannesdatter Saebo, to Capron, Boone County, IL. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.

The army listed Anderson as living in Capron, age 20, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 17, 1861, at Boone County and mustered on November 15, 1861, at Madison, WI, as Corporal (Korporal). He was absent from company to guard a supply train traveling from Stevenson, AL, on October 13, 1863. He was then sick in Nashville, TN, on October 26, 1863. Anderson mustered out with his company on December 20, 1864, at Chattanooga, TN.

After the war, he married Johanna Ingebreksdatter Vange on March 17, 1870. They had at least four children:  Anna A. (1872-1923), Bertha E. (1874-1926), Nelly A. (1877-1898), and Ida (1880-1936).  Anderson died on December 9, 1908, and was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Capron.
