Ole Haraldson Ulen was born in 1813 in the parish of Wiger (Viker) in Norderhov, Buskerud fylke, Norway and married Gertrude on March 16, 1834 in Aadal, Buskerud, Norway. They had a daughter, Ingeborg (Isabel), in 1836. They traveled to America in July 1850 on the ship Christiane and came to Green County, WI. After three years, the family moved to Rock Creek, IA. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MM and IA, with the rest from WI.

The army listed him as living in Rock Creek, Mitchell County, IA, age 49, and married. He enlisted for three years on December 7, 1861 in Mitchell County and mustered at Madison, WI, on February 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He served as a carpenter. On June 11, 1862, he was left behind sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10. He became unfit for service and was discharged on a Surgeon’s Certificate on August 3, 1862.
