Ole Thompson was born on August 10, 1841 at Vang, Valdres, Norway, the son of a blacksmith, Thomas Rogan, and Dorst Olesdatter. He came to America in 1857 to Winneshiek County, IA. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.

The army listed him as living in Winneshiek County, IA, age 21, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 17, 1862 in Winneshiek County and mustered at Madison, WI on February 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was with the Pioneer Corps in November 1862. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN in September 1864. Thompson was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) on October 1, 1864. He was said to have seen action in 14 encounters with the enemy. On February 10, 1865, he mustered out with Company K at Chattanooga.

After the war, he lived after the war near Twin Valley, MN. He was married in 1866 to Mrs. Ingeborg Skiem (Skeim) [1844-1932]. They had seven children, two born in IA and five in Norman County, MN. In 1873, they moved to Flom Township, Norman County. In 1892, he was living in Fossum, Norman County, MN. He died on December 31, 1918. He was buried at Wild Rice Lutheran churchyard in Norman County.
