Isak Syverson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.

The army listed him as living in La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 3, 1862 at La Crosse and mustered at Madison, WI on January 8, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was a wagoner for a long time and was with the quartermaster in Chattanooga, TN on November 29, 1863, and with the division supply train a few days later. He was with the quartermaster’s supply train on January 17, 1864. Syverson was on detached service in Chattanooga on October 5, 1864. He mustered out with Company A at Chattanooga, TN on December 20, 1864.
