Lars S. Slateem was born in 1843 in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.
The army listed him as living in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA, age 19, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 25, 1862 at Decorah and mustered in Madison, WI on February 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). Slateem was left behind sick in Iuka, MS on August 20, 1862 and became unfit for service and was discharged for disability at Jackson, TN on October 9, 1862. He enlisted again on March 30, 1864 for G Company of the IA 12th Infantry using the name “Lars L Stalim”. He mustered on April 28, 1864 as a Private and mustered out on January 20, 1866 at Memphis, TN.
After the war, he was granted a pension of $24.99 per month. On November 12, 1918, he died at the age of 75 and was buried at the State Home Cemetery in Hot Springs, SD, lot 18, grave 57. Grave marker shows his unit as G Company of the IA 12th Infantry.
