Henry Siegel was born “Henrik Anker Bjerregaard Ziegler” at Stade in Vaage, Oppland, Norway. He was son of Captain U. R. Ziegler. Henry came to U. S. in 1858. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 30, and unmarried. He enlisted on September 27, 1861 as Sergeant (Sersjant) and mustered on December 15, 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant and then commissioned as a Lieutenant (Løytnant) on January 8, 1862 and detached from Company to serve as Provost Marshall at General Davis’ First division headquarters. He was commissioned First Lieutenant on December 16, 1862 at Murfreesboro, TN. Siegel was detached on October 13, 1863 to take command over the escort for the provision transport from Stevenson, AL to Chattanooga. He was sick in hospital at Chattanooga. On December 24, 1863, he was given leave from hospital. He was sick in the hospital on June 25, 1864. He was commissioned as Captain but never mustered as such. He mustered out as First Lieutenant on December 20, 1864 at Chattanooga.
After the war, he married Hella M. and served as a county constable in Chicago. Hella filed for a pension in her husband’s name on June 27, 1885.
