Osten Rulland joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of Company E called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed him as living in Upper Coon Valley, Bad Ax (Vernon) County, WI, born in Nord Fron, Norway, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 5, 1861 in Monroe County, WI, but the enlistment credited to Portland, Monroe County. Rulland mustered on December 10, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in hospital at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862 and sent to hospital near Farmington, MS on July 28, 1862. The “Date, place and order of discharge not known, the account having been destroyed.” Non-military sources indicate he was discharged from the service for disability on October 11, 1862 at Cincinnati, OH.
