Amund Pederson was born “Amund Pedersen Busbergbjerget” on November 23, 1842 at Busbergbjerget in Gausdal, Oppland fylke, Norway, the son of Peder Bertelsen Busbergbjerget and Mari Olsdatter Sønstegaard. He came to America with his parents and siblings on the Preciosa, which sailed from Drammen, Buskerud on June 2, 1849 and arrived in New York on July 26, 1849. They came to Jefferson County, WI, and moved about 1854 to the town of Martell, Pierce County, WI. Pederson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed him as living in Martell, Pierce County, WI, age 19, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 11, 1861 at Martell, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 13, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL in October 1863. On January 13, 1865, he mustered out with Company G at Chattanooga, TN. He was married on April 25, 1869 to Karen Olsdatter Jahr and had six children. Some of their names were Peder O. (1870), Melvin (1872), L. Bernhard (1874), and G. Maria (1876).
